Front Entrance Maintenance

We will be asking that each Zone take a turn in “adopting” the front entrance for a month beginning in August for the rest of 2014. Zones will be asked to participate from August – September as your executive officers have agreed to adopt October, November and December. Please consider being a part of weeding and watering, particularly as temperatures heat up.

Thanks to the 30 households who renewed memberships for 2014, we have plenty of funds to purchase the solar lanterns in the larger size. It is our goal to “light the way” by our Fall meeting (details to follow).

Neighborhood Yard Sale
We’ll be holding the annual sale in late August/early-September if there is enough interest from neighbors. Please email JenBuddin@gmail.com if you’d like to participate and we’ll get a date on the books!

West Ashley News

The new owner of Ashley Towne Landing, Faison, a development company and major real estate firm out of Charlotte NC, has begun cosmetic updates with more comprehensive development plans in place for the future. We are also staying in touch with city planners to keep informed about what’s going on at the old North Bridge Piggly Wiggly as well.

The City of Charleston is negotiating with Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital System a partnership agreement for a West Ashley Senior Center. In the interim, St. Frances and the City of Charleston Recreation Department are offering senior centric programs at the Bees Landing Recreation Center. Give the center a call at 402-4571 or for more information or visit the
Senior Programs Page or Bees Landing page.

Learn more about the County’s Mosquito Control Program, how you can help “fight the bite” and see ground spraying schedules online.

The City of Charleston’s 3-acre Northbridge Park is now open, with a pier and dock, a canoe and kayak launch, a picnic area and 16 parking spaces.

There are so many exciting opportunities that pop up on our radar like the Movie Night at the Landing series. We post these events to our Facebook page, so be sure to “like” us for more information.

Crime Watch & Prevention

There was an unlocked truck that was broken into it last week with $4 and a handgun being stolen. Please make sure to lock and secure all property and to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.

The CPD would like all neighbors to please take notice of unusual activities in “Homes for sale” and vacant homes as they can be used by juveniles or homeless persons to “hang out” and/or do drugs, have sexual relations, or damage the actual home. Other criminals actually steal the copper from the home or its a/c units, or appliances. The City of Charleston Police Department would like for you to keep an eye on these properties and to not hesitate in calling Police if there appears to be someone there and it looks suspicious (743-7200)

The Team 4 (West Ashley) Citizens Advisory Group meetings give citizens the opportunity to meet with Charleston Chief of Police Greg Mullen and members of his command staff to discuss any issues or concerns.  Citizens also hear about initiatives and other things regarding the police department. The following are the meetings scheduled for the remainder of 2014:
September 11, 6:30 – 7:30 pm: Bees Ferry Community Center, 1580 Ashley Gardens Blvd.
November 13, 6:30 – 7:30 pm: Ashley River Creative Arts School, 1871 Wallace School Road

Hurricane Season and Safety
Mark Wilbert the Emergency Manager for the City of Charleston stressed that it is important to identify neighbors who may need special assistance during an emergency including the elderly or infirm. Please email JenBuddin@gmail.com if you have a specific concern about a neighbor so that we may add them to our special assistance list.

Remember Hurricane Season is June 1 to November 30. Visit the City’s Emergency Information Web site for more information about how to prepare you and your family for an emergency.

Four simple steps can help YOU get ready:
❑ Get a kit of emergency supplies.
❑ Make a plan of what you will do.
❑ Be informed about what might happen.
❑ Get involved in preparing your community.
Everyone should have an emergency plan and be prepared to take care of themselves for at least the first 72 hours after a disaster. Remember, no two disasters are the same, the most effective way to protect you and your family is to be prepared.
