• Thank you to all who contributed your time, money and energy to the front entrance project. The DOT required the sign to be positioned in a specific spot and the garden committee is currently making plans to update, move and add more native, sustainable plants to the entrance.  We are always looking for volunteers to help water and maintain the front bed, so please let us know if you’re interested in the comments section!

We will have the information provided by Sgt Shelor on our Web site in a couple of weeks under the new heading: CRIME WATCH:

    Halloween Safety

    From the Charleston Police:

    TIPS FOR TRICK-OR-TREATERS

    * Carry a flashlight with you for visibility.
    * Always stay in a group with an adult!
    * Never enter a stranger’s house or car for a treat!
    * Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the grass away from the street.
*Don’t cris-cross the street. Go to all the houses on one side of the street, then cross and go back.

*Look both ways before crossing the street and if you are wearing a mask take it off.
    * Wait until an adult can check your candy before you eat any of it.
    * Only accept treats from neighbors or friends you know!

    TIPS FOR PARENTS
    * Plan costumes that are bright and reflective! Consider adding more reflective tape to costumes + trick or treat bags. Always carry flashlights.
    * Masks can limit or block eyesight, consider makeup or cut the mask eyeholes bigger so they can see. Remind children to remove their masks to cross the street!
    * We recommend that children do not use props like guns, knives, or swords. However, if they are used, make sure they don’t look real!
    * Clear hazards from your property. Remove obstacles such as flower pots and garden hoses, so children won’t trip on them rushing from house to house.
    * Remind your children not to eat the candy until an adult has checked their treats!
    * Your child’s school may be having a Halloween party. Call the School and ask.
    * Please explain to children the difference between tricks and vandalism.

    TIPS FOR BUSINESSES/MOTORISTS
    * Heighten your awareness and be cautious of purchases that may have the potential to cause personal injury or property damage – such as paint ball guns or large quantities of eggs.
    * Drive slowly and cautiously through your neighborhoods. Remember children may not look before crossing the street.

Please report any suspicious activity immediately to the local law enforcement agency. As always in an emergency call 911. Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!

There are 5 neighbors who are working to ensure that the new planting thrives and continues to grow!  We still need help with watering and weeding, so please contact Arnold Postell at edible_gardens@yahoo.com.  A bid for the front entrance sign has been accepted and we will be hosting a dedication very soon, so stay tuned for details.  This truly is a neighborhood-effort and we thank all of our neighbors for being a part!

    CRIME WATCH
The Neighborhood Association is working with the City of Charleston Police Department to organize a Neighborhood Crime Watch program. Our neighbor Mark Del Mastro is our liason and is working with the CPD and Team 4 to certify Charleston Estates 1.  A Crime Prevention presentation will be a part of our meeting in September and we are also looking into purchasing Crime Watch signs ($15 each from the City). We have also had several requests to look into “No Solicitation” signs for the front of our neighborhood to cut down on the door-to-door folks who could potentially be criminals ‘casing’ the neighborhood.  These matters and more will be addressed at September’s meeting, so please come and be a part of that discussion.

    MEMBERSHIP DUES
Don’t forget to pay your dues if you have not already done so. Dues are $15 a year and can be mailed or delivered to 29 Bainbridge Drive.

  • We are excited to share the plans to redesign the front entrance to Charlestowne Estates 1 (left). The plan is to make it similar to that of Charlestowne Landing with a lot of sweet grass plants, along with some lantana, ruellia and saw palmetto plants. There will be a tree towards the backend that could be a palmetto or oak, nothing that would block the view of Old Towne Road. There will also be a sign that will be constructed that will have the neighborhood name and logo that will face either side of Old Towne Road. On the smaller side of the sign (visible as you are leaving the neighborhood) will be a small plaque listing all of those that funded the project. We would also like to dedicate the entrance to Ms. Gasque, who has tirelessly maintained and taken care of the fronts bed for years. Without his love and support, we would not have the entrance we have today!

    1) As a member of the neighborhood association, you have a vote to support YES or NO for the redesign. All votes are due by Friday, December 16 and can be returned to 1587 Holton Place, Charleston, SC 29407.
Download your ballot to vote Yes or No for front entrane or vote online here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X9WLXRW

    2) Please consider being a donor of this important project. For as little as $25, you can have your name or company name listed on the entrance plaque as one of the supporters of this important project to enhance the neighborhood. Anyone who donated a minimum of $25 will be entered to win a special package that includes tickets to the Charleston Wine + Food Festival. You will also be invited to a special ribbon cutting celebration in the spring. We appreciate your considering assisting in this project.

    Letter from the President

    Charlestowne Estates I neighbors,

Best wishes to you and your family for happiness and good health this Holiday Season and throughout the coming New Year.
As we move into the Holiday season, I would like to take a minute to express my sincere appreciation of everyone’s involvement in our neighborhood this past year. I would also like to thank you for all of your emails and concerns, as your input is vital to our success. Please continue to email me any questions, concerns or comments, both good and bad.
Recently, we have had a few unfortunate incidents in the neighborhood, such as home and car robberies. We are working with the police department to create a communication stream that will notify everyone in the association.
I hope you enjoy all that the Holiday Season has to offer and, as always, please do not hesitate to email me if I can be of assistance to you. Happy Holidays and safe travels during the season.

    Best regards,
    Will Moore, President
